Kevin Costner both produced and starred in this film about a custody battle between 7-year-old Eloise’s white grandfather and black grandmother. It could have delved deeper into some of the issues it raises—racism, the importance of family and knowing where you came from–but its balanced approach makes the film a treat to watch. But sometimes it swings toward too sugary-sweet.

The characters are mostly realistic, flawed individuals, although many may take exception to the character of Reggie, Eloise’s deadbeat, druggie father, for being too stereotypical. As always, Octavia Spencer shines, this time as Rowena, Eloise’s maternal grandmother. The African-immigrant tutor, played by Mpho Koaho, was an especially bright light.

Should You See It? Yes. It’s both entertaining and relevant to current issues. –S.Z.
