This movie is hilarious. But I’d find Melissa McCarthy funny if she were standing still with her mouth taped shut. Fortunately, she was anything but in Spy, the story of a behind-the-scenes CIA analyst who finds herself out in the field for the first time since training—a decade and a half ago. As Susan Cooper, McCarthy brings her signature dry-witted badinage and physicality to the spy role as she attempts to locate nuclear warheads in the possession of unscrupulous broker ‘De Luca,’ played by Bobby Cannavale in slicked-back hair and impeccable suits. A cast of characters, with the emphasis on ‘characters,’ complements McCarthy in silly and sometimes heavy-handed roles. Miranda Hart plays McCarthy’s analyst sidekick, providing plenty of fun as the two of them cat chat about uber-spy Karen Walker (the gorgeous Morena Baccarin); Rose Byrne is the villainous Bulgarian selling the warhead, who has a litany of Mean Girl barbs for McCarthy; and Jason Statham is priceless as CIA agent Rick Ford, an Aussie who reminds everyone that his exploits in the field will always dwarf theirs.

Should You See It? Yes! You’ll laugh throughout the entire two hours. — D.W.
