Exceptional service and record prices since 1982

Earlier this year, Leslie Hindman Auctioneers and Cowan’s Auctions were acquired by Hindman LLC. Together they form Hindman, one of the nation’s leading fine art auction houses offering solutions that connect clients nationwide to the global art market by providing expertise across all categories, sales channels and price points. The firm operates more salesrooms in the United States than any other auction house and conducts over 100 auctions per year in categories such as Fine Art, 20th-Century Design, Asian Art, Furniture and Decorative Arts, Rare Books, Couture, and Fine Jewelry and Timepieces. In addition to St. Louis, Hindman offices are located in Atlanta, Chicago, Cincinnati, Cleveland, Denver, Milwaukee, Naples, Palm Beach, and Scottsdale.

Open since 2014, Hindman’s St. Louis office and salesroom provide full auction and estate services throughout Missouri and neighboring areas. It is served by specialists in all major categories and secures consignments from private collections, estates, and institutional collections for sales throughout the year. The St. Louis office also offers insurance and estate tax appraisal services.

Hindman St. Louis is committed to recognizing the rich history of art in the city and promoting locally significant estates and institutions within the community. These collections have included the Louis Daniel Brodsky Collection of Art Nouveau, the regional art collection of Rudolph and Ann Torrini, and the American Kennel Club Museum of the Dog, among many others. The office regularly features St. Louis and Missouri artists in its auctions, including Arthur Osver, Fred Greene Carpenter, Gustav Goetsch, Fred Conway, Werner Drewes, and Bill Fett. Hindman St. Louis celebrates the important contributions that local artists have made to the community and fosters their inclusion in local collections. Additionally, Hindman has set the auction record for several regional artists, such as Bryan Haynes, Belle Cramer, Hazel Goetsch, Edward Boccia, and William Quinn.

The recent Oct. 10 St. Louis Collections auction included property from local collections and estates. The sale featured fine art, Meissen porcelain figures, rugs, classic glass, English and Continental furniture and decorative arts, and an extensive collection of sterling silver. The sale’s fine art session was especially successful, with several works selling well above their estimates. Notable lots included To Vuillard-Blue & Yellow by Joyce Kozloff, which realized $21,250 against a $500-$700 estimate; On the Bacino de San Marco-Venice by Franz Auguste Rezia, which sold for $16,250 against a $1,000-$1,500 estimate; and Early Spring by Tadashi Asoma, which hammered at $12,500 against a $2,000-$3,000 estimate.

Hindman St. Louis frequently brings significant property to auction. Past highlights include Still Life by Thomas Hart Benton, which sold for $455,000 against a $100,000-$200,000 estimate; Ralston Crawford’s Pennsylvania Barn, which realized $572,500 against a $200,000-$400,000 estimate; and Saul’s Guernica, which set the record for artist Peter Saul at $575,000.

The next St. Louis Collections sale will be held in the spring of 2020. The office is always accepting consignments in all categories. Please contact Anna Shaver to schedule a complimentary auction evaluation of your property.
