St. Louis students have been busy reaping awards at FIRST Robotics competitions in the state, regional and international levels. FIRST (For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology) aims to interest kids in pursuing science- and technology-related careers.
Clayton High’s Robohounds was the only participating team in the competition (April 24 through 26 at the Edward Jones Dome) that had previously won two regional titles—one from St. Louis and another from Arkansas. Westminster Christian Academy’s Team 4256 won a spot at the final event after placing second in the St. Louis Regional Competition.
Webster Groves’ team did particularly well in the competition, winning the third-place Inspire Award, one of the highest honors given to teams that best embody the program’s mission. Additionally, team member Brandon Sanders won the FIRST Dean’s List Finalist Award, which is given to only 128 students each year for leadership, technical skills and embodiment of the program’s values.
Other area schools represented at the competition include John Burroughs, which ranked first in its division, and Principia Upper School, which ranked 36th.

Shakespeare St. Louis made its annual visit to Kirk Day School to perform As You Like It. In honor of Shakespeare Spirit Day, students attended the performance dressed in theatrical garb. The school’s tribute to the playwright culminated with the sixth grade’s performance of Macbeth.

Earlier this spring, two faculty members and nine students from Notre Dame’s sister school in Kyoto, Japan, paid a visit to St. Louis, where they treated students here to cultural demonstrations, including a Japanese dance. Also on the itinerary for the visitors: the Arch, City Museum and Ted Drewes.

Councillor Duncan Sandys, former Lord Mayor of the City of Westminster, England, and great-grandson of Winston Churchill, extended a personal invitation to the Clayton High School Symphonic Orchestra to perform at London’s New Year’s Day parade next year. In March, Sandys visited the school to listen to the orchestra and meet the students and staff who will travel to the U.K.

‘Daring Donesha’ Buhr, a hula-hooper from Fresh State Academy North and Circus Harmony, won the first-place prize at last month’s St. Louis Teen Talent Competition. Winning second and third, consecutively, were the Underground Tappers, a group of students from Central Visual and Performing Arts High School, and a capella hip hop rappers Christopher Frey, Wes Ragland and Marquis Houston from Webster Groves High School.

Forsyth School won first place in the elementary category of the 2013-2014 Green Schools Quest competition. Each of the 39 participating schools had to plan and implement effective and affordable sustainability practices. After the class of 2012 was inspired by a math project to make a gift of sustainability to the school, a 105 panel solar array, funded by the class’ doughnut sales, was mounted on the gym, cutting energy costs for the building by about 25 percent. Forsyth School also expanded its solar education program to include all grade levels.

More than 80 St. Louis-area students participated in the Poetry on Their Terms event at the Missouri History Museum April 16. The students, who had previously won contests in their own schools, read their poetry to the audience.
