Hooked on Books: 11.16.22

Confidence Man by Maggie Haberman | The author of this book has followed Donald Trump for decades, but as a journalist for The New York Times, she had unique access to him during his presidential runs and four years in the White House. I downloaded this book on the first day of publication, I was that excited to read it. Sadly, it was a slog to get through. I learned no new information, and it didn’t contain insightful perspectives from someone who had so much access. Disappointing.

Good Company: A Novel by Cynthia D’Aprix Sweeney
What a great book and fast read! This story is about marriage, family and friendship and what a tangled mess they can be. It is told from different points of view and at different points of time. I so wanted to make someone the villain, but I couldn’t.

Classic Krakauer: Essays on Wilderness and Risk by Jon Krakauer
Why would a self-declared ‘non-nature’ person pick up a book by a man who puts his life at risk in nature for no good reason? I am still trying to figure it out. Krakauer has written many books, and I’ve read all of them, but this compilation of short stories published in magazines like Outside was new to me. I might think what he does is crazy, but he sure can write.

No Way Home by Jody Feldman
This young adult novel had a lot going for it. The main character is named Tess, like my beloved daughter, and it is a crime thriller—we all know how much I love those. Tess is an exchange student in Italy when things take a very strange turn while she is on a call with her parents. Tess is forced to do some things she shouldn’t in order to keep her parents alive. It’s an enjoyable read even if I am not the target market.
