The Gatesworth is always bustling with activity, but when the weather warms, residents truly can enjoy every inch of its sprawling grounds. This spring at the senior community brings entertainment on the terrace, outdoor renovations and unique outings, all of which help set it apart as an extraordinary place to call home.
“Spring is such a beautiful season on our campus as residents walk the courtyards and see our trees and perennials in bloom,” says executive director Carrie Montrey. “More than 1,500 annuals are planted each year, and the grounds feature more than a mile of walking paths, a putting green, a naturally landscaped lake, a reflecting pond and a 45-foot weeping willow.” It’s quite the scene, and residents can enjoy it on their own or with the Walking Club, led by a fitness instructor starting in May.
The community currently is undergoing a major renovation to its original courtyard (one of four), which includes a new travertine patio with fountain and seating area, as well as updates to landscaping around apartment patios and along walking paths in the area. To ensure they were part of the process, residents were asked for their input on it all. “The Gatesworth is their home,” Montrey notes. “We want them to be surrounded by things they love.” Many residents used to be home gardeners, and they requested plants they once cared for, like hostas, ferns, hydrangeas and rhododendron. “They have decades of experience with maintaining gorgeous gardens of their own, so their knowledge is invaluable,” Montrey says.
Events like these show just how much residents are valued. Family members, even the furry ones, are always welcome, and the atmosphere is kept fun, active and social. Salvatore and Celia Sutera have lived at The Gatesworth for seven years and look forward to enjoying another spring spent with family and friends. “I love walking the many paths throughout the courtyards looking for a new batch of ducklings,” Celia says. “And I search for other wildlife, too. I’ve seen raccoons, fox, owls and hawks.” She also enjoys getting out in the community. Seasonal outings offered include an evening performance of Shakespeare in the Park and a day trip to Warm Springs Ranch, home of the Clydesdales. Whatever their interests, residents will find something to do at The Gatesworth. Even if it’s just dining al fresco with friends on the patio, spring will be a season of enjoyment.
