The Insider: 2.22.17

Visitors to the Saint Louis Art Museum are in for a treat come March 3. That’s when they can view a free exhibition, Learning to See: Renaissance and Baroque Masterworks from the Phoebe Dent Weil and Mark S. Weil Collection. The Weils, a local art-centric family, have committed their collection of Old Master prints and European sculpture to the museum. He is an art historian and former W.U. art history professor; she is an art conservator who pioneered the field of sculpture conservation locally in the ’70s. The collection includes rare early Italian Renaissance engravings and exceptional works by Albrecht Durer (pictured above) and Rembrandt van Rijn.

A slick, new Visitors Guide to St. Louis is hot off the presses. Compiled by the St. Louis Convention & Visitors Commission, it gives visitors to our fair city a good idea of what’s available, from Saint Louis Art Museum exhibitions to great barbecue spots. The glossy, full-color magazines, 350,000 of them, are being distributed across the country and can be picked up locally at one of Explore St. Louis’ visitor centers:the Old Courthouse, America’s Center, Forest Park visitor center, and Lambert Airport baggage claim in both terminals. Check it out online at explorestlouis.com.

Dust off your collectibles and head down to the PBS Antiques Roadshow July 8, when the popular appraisal show comes to town! Three one-hour episodes will be produced from the St. Louis event to be aired during the show’s 22nd season in 2018. The show has not visited since 2015 and hopes to unearth some treasures. Attendance is free, but tickets are required, so apply at pbs.org/antiques/tickets by April 10. Guests are invited to bring two items for appraisal, although only some of these will be chosen.
