from the homeowner | In real estate, it’s all about location, location, location, and the current homeowners knew they couldn’t pass up 570 W. Monroe Ave., nestled on a little less than an acre across from Kirkwood Park. The existing house didn’t suit their needs, so they used the foundation to create a completely new, one-of-kind home. Now, a little less than a year after the construction’s completion, they’re ready to find a new family to enjoy the unique, thoughtfully designed property.

What do you like about the home’s location?
We love Kirkwood because it’s such a wonderful community that’s not too big or too small. It’s very walkable—in fact, we can walk downtown and enjoy all the great shops and restaurants. Kirkwood Park is right across the street. We can watch the Fourth of July fireworks from our front yard, and the tennis courts and aquatic center also are right there. It’s really a prime location.

How did you approach designing the home?
We wanted an open floor plan with a more mid-century modern style. The back of the house has a lot of windows so there is natural light and great views of the yard and park. It was important to us that we used all natural materials, so there is nothing fabricated in the house. It’s all materials like wood and granite. There is an in-law suite on the lower level. It’s a separate functional, handicap accessible apartment that can be entered from both outside and inside the house. We also created a walk-in wine cellar that holds more than 400 bottles.

Do you have a favorite room in the home?
We love sitting by the fireplace in the main living space. It’s also wonderful to sit on the elevated deck. It’s just beautiful in the early morning, and you can enjoy the breeze and the views.

How is the home for entertaining?
We designed the home with entertaining in mind. There are a lot of indoor-outdoor connections, and the main living space is completely open to the kitchen and dining room. It’s got a large galley kitchen with an island that runs the entire length. For outdoor events, there is a huge patio, and it’s a beautiful space. We also included a half-bath on the lower level so that guests don’t have to go upstairs or into the in-law suite.

What do you want the next homeowners to know about the property?
It’s a unique property that was thoughtfully designed. It’s a great home for a multi-generational family. There are three full-sized baths and six bedrooms, including two suites. The property is very approachable and livable. It’s a special house. We’re sad to be selling it.
