For Hispanic Heritage month, students learned about the ingredients and spices used in Latin cooking by making salsa. At the end of the unit, students held a party, bringing in various ingredients and preparing different types of salsa. A panel of judges, including superintendent Dr. David Ulrich, judged the five salsa varieties prepared. The class also presented a mural they created with the saying “Todo el mundo sonrie en el mismo idioma,” which translates to “Everybody smiles in the same language.”

Students in the lower school got into the autumn spirit with pumpkins. The cross-curricular activities included reading activities, pumpkin carving and investigations into how many seeds pumpkins of varying sizes have inside. Pumpkin Week wrapped up with a science demonstration, where teachers demonstrated the force needed to pop a pumpkin with rubber bands, used a chemical reaction to create a jack-o-lantern face and made a pumpkin erupt with “elephant toothpaste” (a mix of hydrogen peroxide and dish soap).
