
The Press Club of Metropolitan Saint Louis honorsĀ sports columnist Rick Hummel, broadcaster andĀ former Cardinals player Bob Uecker, and critic andĀ St. Louis Beacon co-founder Bob Duffy Jan. 21 at itsĀ annual gala. Hummel will be celebrated asĀ Media Person of the Year, Uecker will receiveĀ a Lifetime Achievement Award, and Duffy will beĀ recognized for his contributions to journalism.

Joshua Aiken, a senior atĀ Washington University,Ā has been chosen as aĀ Rhodes scholar.Ā The 21-year-old AmericanĀ culture studies/political scienceĀ major will use the scholarship,Ā which pays for up to threeĀ years at the University ofĀ Oxford in England, to studyĀ the experiences of refugeesĀ and asylum seekers. Aiken isĀ the 27th Rhodes scholar fromĀ Washington University.

When West Side Story returns toĀ the Fabulous Fox Theatre Jan. 3 throughĀ 5, it will be old home week for threeĀ cast members with local ties. RicardoĀ Rique-Sanchez, who portrays PepeĀ (far right in photo), grew up in St. Louis,Ā attending Central Visual & Performing ArtsĀ High School (ā08) and Stephens CollegeĀ (ā11); Alejandro Fonseca (SharkĀ Boy) attended Lindenwood University;Ā and Kristin Yancy (Shark Girl) went toĀ Washington University (2011).

Two Washington University faculty membersĀ have been named fellows of the AmericanĀ Association for the Advancement ofĀ Science, the worldās largest general scientificĀ society. Dr. Michael Holtzman and RohitĀ Pappu, Ph.D.,were among 388 new fellowsĀ recognized for their efforts to advance scienceĀ or its applications. Holtzman, professor ofĀ medicine, is known for his contributions toĀ understanding and treating chronic lung diseases;Ā Pappu, professor of biomedical engineering,Ā was honored for his research on the forms andĀ functions of intrinsically disordered proteins.
