The Missouri Botanical Garden has received a grant from the National Parks Service for $99,920 as part of its place on the National Underground Railroad Network to Freedom. Garden founder Henry Shaw owned an unknown number of enslaved people from 1828 until around 1860. New interpretation will provide information to visitors through programs, panels, exhibits and digital engagement. This program is part of the garden’s efforts
to raise awareness about the stories of enslaved people and their connection to Shaw and the St. Louis community.
