Over the past 20 years, Buckingham Family of Financial Services has developedĀ a mission that goes well beyond wealth management services. It also has fostered anĀ environment where advisers are encouraged to work collaboratively to ensure theĀ best long-term client-adviser relationships. Considered an innovator in the field, nowĀ Buckingham has taken another progressive step by reaching out, specifically, to attractĀ more women on both the adviser and client sides.

Shannon O’Toole Kuhlman joined the Buckingham human resources team in 2008Ā and now serves as chief talent officer. She says her main responsibility is to serve as theĀ firm’s ā€˜culture keeper.’ ā€œI am responsible for recruiting and selecting new associates,Ā retaining those we hire, and making sure we have high-performing associates who deliverĀ the service experience our clients deserve and expect,ā€ she explains.

Kuhlman says the firm has always done a great job of serving its female clients butĀ wanted to take it a step further by launching Women and Wealth. It’s an initiative to helpĀ advisers provide women investors with custom wealth planning and asset managementĀ services that focus on the personal needs and experiences unique to women. ā€œIn workingĀ with female clients, many of our advisers noticed a commonality in their stories,ā€ KuhlmanĀ explains. ā€œSo we recognized an opportunity to engage women on a different level.ā€Ā Buckingham hired Manisha Thakor as director of wealth strategies for women and formedĀ a six-person advisory council composed of women in various roles at the firm to supportĀ this specific area. ā€œWe’re all about serving our clients one relationship at a time, regardlessĀ of demographics, but this offering addresses our female investors in a more purposefulĀ way,ā€ Kuhlman says. ā€œWomen want to be empoweredĀ when it comes to their financial decisions.ā€

This year, Kuhlman became the first womanĀ named to Buckingham’s board of managers. SheĀ says the percentage of female advisers nationwide isĀ 23 percent, and the company plans to exceed that statistic. ā€œTalking about your financialĀ situation is a highly emotional conversation, and clients want to work with advisers whoĀ understand their needs,ā€ Kuhlman says.

The company’s focus on creating a positive, supportive work environment is anotherĀ way to better serve clients by attracting—and keeping—the best young talent. ā€œTheĀ importance of top talent is at the very core of our strategic plan,ā€ she says. ā€œWe wantĀ to make sure our associates feel like they are doing challenging work, help them feelĀ connected to what they do, give them feedback, and provide them with mentor andĀ leadership development programs.ā€ She adds that Buckingham also supports associatesĀ in their personal lives, as well, which Kuhlman appreciates as a working mom. ā€œWeĀ just had a day when we could bring our children to the office. It was so nice to shareĀ with my three boys what I was working on and help them understand why work isĀ so important to me.ā€ She says the firm makes sure associates have what they need toĀ succeed. ā€œWe don’t sell particular products, so essentially our people are our greatestĀ assets,ā€ Kuhlman notes. ā€œThe way they interact and engage with our clients has gottenĀ us to where we are today.ā€
