During these short days of winter when sunshine is scarce, it is more important than ever to have windows in your home that bring in the maximum amount of light. In addition to the unparalleled beauty of natural light, glass windows and doors also can be impactful design elements in every room. Here are some of my favorites.
This double set of doors allows sunshine in and offers privacy when you want it. Brilliant! Whenever possible, create a line of sight from the front to the back of your house upon entry. Add a skylight to enjoy a connection with nature while you shower. Bumping out this small shed dormer above the sink adds immense amounts of light and architectural detail. Don’t be afraid to use glass doors inside your home. Take advantage of a peaked wall to make a cathedral-style wall of windows. This photo really demonstrates the amount of light (and space) you can add just by adding a dormer to a second-floor space. Set up shop in a sunny bay window. If you’re in need of space and natural light, extending a room with a bay window is a fairly simple renovation with maximum rewards. Turn your ceiling into a potential light source by adding skylights to a peaked roof overhead. A British conservatory is a perfect way to get some natural light all year long and keep your plants alive over the winter. Consider forgoing upper cabinets and take narrow windows from counter to crown on an exterior kitchen or bar wall. Maximize the height of your glass windows and doors whenever possible. It is high drama and adds light.
