Q: As a relatively new small business owner, I’ve been told the key to building a successful business is networking and relationships. Your thoughts?

A: While I agree that networking and relationships are essential components for building a successful business, for my money, the real secret for any company’s success is trust.

Trust is an indispensable asset to a business at every stage and especially affects employees, stakeholder relationships and networks, which can significantly reduce risk during uncertain times.

Why trust is so important:
Builds Relationships and Collaboration: Trust enables stronger ties with customers, suppliers, partners, investors and employees. It promotes greater cooperation and more effective, honest communications. Without trust, a business can falter and fail due to doubt, miscommunications or conflict.

Talent Attraction and Retention: Employees are more productive and committed in a high-trust organization. Leaders who are transparent and timely in their actions not only attract but keep talent and reduce turnover. (Leadership that doesn’t make timely decisions can lead to frustration and erode trust of the firm both internally and externally ).

Customer Loyalty and Market Reputation: Customers are more likely to remain loyal to businesses they trust. It is the basis of a positive brand reputation that helps businesses stand out in competitive markets.

Effective Communications and Problem-Solving: People are more willing to openly, honestly share information in high-trust environments, which can reduce misunderstandings and can expedite decision-making. And when setbacks occur, it can serve as a buffer to enable relationships to recover more quickly.

Reduces Risk and Uncertainty: Trust allows your business to share sensitive information, take strategic risks and invest resources with more confidence.

Builds a Positive Organizational Culture: Trust nurtures a culture of integrity, transparency and mutual respect. And those who lead with compassion, act with competence and ethical standards create an environment where employees feel valued, motivated and want to remain.

(Your) Bottom Line: Trust is a strategic, vital component—not a soft skill—to your business’ success. It is essential in every aspect and at every level of your business. It enables businesses to build a solid foundation to attract and retain talent, investors, strong customer relationships and create a culture of collaboration and innovation. Without trust, regardless of a stellar business plan or products, any business of any size can falter or fail to deliver sustainable success. I’m reminded of my favorite piano man Billy Joel’s classic song: “It’s always been a matter of trust.”
