Dear Homework,

Fourteen years ago, you designed our prairie style home, and we have loved living here ever since. Lately, we have been thinking about adding a shade pavilion to the north side of our swimming pool. Do you think adding a structure will ruin the view to our backyard?

Sincerely,

—Time for an Update

Dear Time for an Update,

I actually think an airy pavilion might make the yard more interesting. If we use materials that echo those of the main house and keep it very open, it could actually improve the view because it helps disguise the required pool fence.

I would make it big enough for a couple of furniture arrangements and also add a stone fireplace (which could be a great place to mount a large TV) to increase its usefulness. It’s nice to visit past projects. The landscape has really matured to provide you great privacy. I’m sure a shade pavilion will extend your enjoyment of this already delightful area.

Thanks for asking,
