When new patients come to Premier Prosthetics and Orthotics, they experience the highest level of convenience and care from certified prosthetists who are passionate about making a direct impact on their quality of life. William McNab first met Greg Doerr, one of the original owners and co-founders of Premier Prosthetics, in April 2021 just prior to having his left leg amputated below the knee.
The extremely active 62-year-old participates in numerous sports and activities such as pickleball, hiking, biking, swimming and fishing. He had undergone more than 40 orthopedic surgeries in his lifetime. “I’m never easy on my body,” he says. After his last surgery, an ankle replacement, McNab ended up with a severe infection in the bone. His only options were to have his lower leg amputated or have all of the hardware removed, leaving him with a non-functional left leg.
Not one to be slowed down in life, McNab opted for the amputation, and his surgeon recommended working with Doerr and the team at Premier Prosthetics. McNab set up an appointment to review his prosthetic choices ahead of the surgery. “I talked to Greg and saw that he had photos on his walls of quite a few athletes who he’d worked with,” McNab says. “I told him what I expected, and I’m not an easy patient to work with. I only know how to live life one way, and that’s hard as heck. He knew I would put his prosthetic to the test. I didn’t plan on changing my life at all, so I wanted the most responsive type of prosthetic, even if it was difficult to learn to operate.”
McNab had no problem learning to use his new leg and happily walked out of the Premier Prosthetics office the day he received it. He’s now back to spending four or five hours at a time on the pickleball court, playing with several groups around town. In addition to his sports and leisure activities, the prosthetic allows him to do everything he needs to in his daily life at home with his wife of 40 years and their two dogs, which he enjoys taking on walks.
“My quality of life is much higher now with the prosthetic than anything I was going to be left with after the last surgery,” he says. “People looked at me like I was crazy, like it was an abrupt decision, but ultimately it turned out to be the best thing I could have done. There’s nothing you can’t do with a prosthetic if you put your mind to it.”
